Students in the special education unit were set a challenge where they were given a 'kit' to build an indoor cubby house. There were no instructions provided, only an initial demonstration on how the individual pieces fitted together. Students had to examine the materials, create a design for their cubby house, communicate this with each other and collectively construct the cubby. The students were successful in producing a sturdy cubby house which was enjoyed by all afterwards.

This activity gave the students the opportunity to use their skills of working well within a group, thinking about the needs of the group rather than their personal needs, valuing and respecting others, communicating effectively with others, being reliable and cooperative, problem solving and being flexible.
